Well, tis a new year. A fresh start is upon us and the annual reset for mindsets and habits. We are ready to make changes, to begin again and to live like we have never lived before. It is a rejuvenating time. Even writing the date in January is nice. The first of the first. The second of the first. The fifth of the first. Such a lovely ring to it.

Walk with me
Writing is a habit. If you want to be a writer, then you must write. There is no point in thinking you are going to be hit by some bolt of creative lightning sometime in the future. It doesn’t happen that way. A few weeks ago I went to see the Irish Author John Banville speak at a festival. I got to ask him what secret habits he had to help him write.
“I write…there is no secret, no techniques. It is hard work.”
Excuses excuses
It is all too easy to blame other things for your failures in life. These other things maybe your inept teacher, your cruel mother or your cheating lover. You can pick out a thousand reasons why you just didn’t quite do what you wanted to do…I had no money, I wasn’t educated or I am too god damned ugly. There are pubs filled around the world with drunks blithering to drunks about how they could have done what they were meant to have done, if only a few things were different.
